The data is first hashed in the browser using the SHA256 method (Secure Hash Algorithm 256) and then transmitted encrypted to Facebook. Facebook compares the hash values of the customer list with the hash values of already existing own user data. Through the comparison, Facebook learns which of those affected is also a Facebook user. The matches are grouped into a Custom Audience on Facebook and saved in the advertiser's account as a "Custom Audience".
